How does Email Tracking work?
At its core, email tracking works by embedding a tiny, microscopic image URL inside an email. When the recipient opens the email, their mail client automatically fetches that image from the server, allowing the server to log the exact time and network details of the request. MailPing streamlines this process by generating a unique, completely invisible image URL for you to inject. As the email traverses the web and is eventually opened, our proxy-aware engine analyzes the network activity in the background and presents the confirmed engagement data clearly on your MailPing dashboard.
Can you track an email for free?
Yes, many services offer free email tracking, but they often attach their own branding to your emails or sell your behavioral data. The free version of MailPing allows users the ability to use a "no strings attached" tracking pixel, but they are limited to one active tracking link at a time. Users are free to delete their active link and create a new one for another email at any time. Pro users are allowed unlimited active tracking pixels.
Do I need to install software or extensions?
Most commercial tracking solutions require you to install heavy browser extensions or desktop software that integrates directly into your email client. MailPing requires zero installation. The Gmail Web Application supports URL-based image injection. MailPing is optimized for use with the Gmail Web Application, however, the URL can be injected using any mail client that supports URL-based image injection. Users that require optimization for web clients other than Gmail are free to contact us.
Is 3rd Party access to my inbox required?
Many tracking tools request extensive OAuth permissions to read, write, and manage your inbox to sync their tracking data. MailPing is built strictly on a privacy-first model. We never request access to your inbox. We only track the independent pixel you manually insert, keeping your personal emails entirely secure and private.
Will tracking pixels trigger Spam Filters?
Aggressive tracking scripts, suspicious redirects, or poorly configured pixels can absolutely cause an email to be flagged as spam or phishing. The MailPing tracking pixel is mathematically invisible and uses standard, deliverability-safe web protocols. Because we do not use invasive tracking scripts, our links maintain your sender reputation and seamlessly bypass strict spam filters.
Can I track emails from my own domain?
Pixel tracking requires URL-based image injection, which some desktop email clients like Outlook do not support natively. You can, however, set up your private domain in your Gmail Web Application using the "Send As Alias" function at no charge, allowing you to use MailPing with your professional email address.
